Russian Princess meets computer geek
Persistence is a virtue possessed in abundance by Natalya Brown, accounting specialist in Administration. Natalya is married to Roger Brown, computer support technician.
A native of Russia, she reversed the common pattern of attending a two-year college then transferring to university. She earned a bachelor's in English and German linguistics in 1998 and was determined to continue her education in the U.S. but found a master's degree prohibitively expensive. "I decided that spending a couple of years here, being immersed in the language and the culture, and earning an associate's in business-which I was very interested in-would serve well."
When she arrived in August '98, she went to work in the cafeteria. (International students may work only on-campus.) Soon she switched to tutoring and mentoring fellow students while carrying up to 21 credits per term. "The academics weren't that difficult, " she said modestly, "since I had been in college for years. But what was hard was using computer software not available in Russia. Using a keyboard without Russian letters...it was not easy."
Fortunately she met Roger on her first day of school, who gladly shared his computer know-how, and two years later the couple was wed.
Natalya graduated in 2000 with an associate's in business administration, then took CIS classes to improve her skills. She then worked as a records specialist for Mercy Behavioral Health until this March when she was hired at UCC. "I'm so happy to be here," she says, beaming. "This is exactly what I wanted to do."
Condolences
Our condolences are with Mae Tavares, UCC custodian, whose husband Elliot passed away last week. Elliot worked in the warehouse, delivered mail for Bart occasionally and even worked the switchboard.
Condolences to Vicki Formosa, bridge coordinator, whose mother died recently.
Our sympathies go to Mike Hoffman, special events director, whose father died last week.
Our thoughts are with all these families during this difficult time.
International Composer
Dr. Jason Heald, chair of the Fine and Performing Arts and music instructor, attended the International Composer Competition in Georgia Thursday through Monday. Three of his songs, "Closer Than Mars" (Jazz), "Wrap Me Up for Christmas" (Holiday), and "Heroes" (Inspiration) were entered. Out of 450 nominees, the competition was narrowed to 150; Dr. Heald's songs being chosen. The first two songs took second place. Former members of the Umpqua Singers, Gary Boyer and Brandi Campbell did an outstanding performance on the entries.
Congratulations Dr. Heald! We are proud of you.
Pink and white M&Ms
There will be special bags of M&Ms will be on sale in September, October, and November. The bags are clearly marked "New pink and white M&M's." The makers of candies have teamed up with the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation to raise funds. For each 8-ounce bag of the special candies sold, M&M will donate 50 cents to the foundation. Let's do all we can to support this cause!
