Leeks, a hearty vegetable
When you remember her name, Susan Leek advises, "Think of the vegetable, not the drip." Then she laughs–something our new library circulation clerk does often and heartily.
Susan is a native of Kansas who moved here from Idaho four years ago when her husband Max was hired as director of the Douglas County Library. "We are very happy here," Susan said, noting that her mother-in-law lives in Roseburg and her own mother lives with them. "It’s wonderful to spend this time with our mothers."
Susan and Max have three children. Jeff, age 23, is in the biostatistics program at the U of WA; Anna, 21, was recently married and majors in education at Concordia University in Portland, and Luke, 19, is studying philosophy at Willamette University.
Luke is following his mother’s lead. She got her bachelor’s in philosophy at Idaho State University. "It’s not a marketable degree, but it sure was fun," Susan said, laughing but also noting that she and Max strongly believe in the value of getting a liberal education before deciding on a career. Susan has primarily been a stay-at-home mother as well as a college student, but she has also been a substitute teacher and an active volunteer in education. Now that her children are grown, she is considering going into library science and meanwhile is glad to be working in UCC’s library. "I really enjoy helping people to help themselves," she says.
Not surprisingly, reading is one of her favorite hobbies. "I just re-read "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn" by Betty Smith–what a wonderful book!" she said enthusiastically. She added that she enjoys reading a wide variety of books with historical fiction a favorite.
Another hobby is one that she prefers to indulge in privately. "I enjoy knitting," she admitted, "But I don’t do it in public." She laughed, self-depreciatingly. "See, I have this rather unorthodox way of knitting...and I specialize in knitting things that don’t fit. In fact, I’m going to start knitting things that don’t need to fit. ‘Here, dear, I made you a nice trapezoid!’"
Susan said that she doesn’t have any pets, but she does have a pet peeve. "Bumper stickers that can’t be removed after the election–those are annoying," she said, laughing infectiously.
When you remember Susan Leek, think laughter, not vegetable.
