Board News

Umpqua Community College’s board of directors met Oct. 12 and approved the hiring of 14 part-time faculty. Three volunteer instructors’ services were also accepted.
The board authorized three new appointments to the UCC Foundation Board; Joanne Johnson of Riddle, Denny Kruse of Roseburg and John Anhorn of Medford will replace departing board members Milton Herbert, Bonnie Ford and Neil Zick. UCC board member Tom Keel expressed appreciation for the service of foundation board members.
Berta Dargen, vice president of instructional services, advised the board that the college is actively working toward offering more evening and Saturday classes as well an increasing the number of distance education programs.
Terry Peek, dean of instruction, informed the board that 16 new occupational programs are being considered, including building trades training, commercial drivers license certification and an educational assistant training program for elementary and high school employees.
Andrea Henderson, executive director of the Oregon Community College Association, and Cam Preus-Braly, commissioner of Oregon Community College and Workforce Development, presented updates regarding the activities of their organizations in Salem. Preus-Haley said more state funding is being requested on behalf of all Oregon community colleges, and also invited feedback from the board. "We want to be sure to accurately represent your interests," she said.
Henderson said that the OCCA is emphasizing three aspects in presentations during the upcoming legislative session. "We will be asking for increased funding, of course," she said. "We will also request capital construction approval, and we’ll be working to ensure that any policy initiative proposals will be favorable to community colleges."
The next regular board meeting is scheduled on Nov. 9, 7 p.m. in UCC’s administration board room.
