New dean speaks bull
Terry Peek, dean of instruction, entered Sam Houston State University on a scholarship–a bull-riding scholarship. "In Texas, intercollegiate rodeo competition is common," he explained, matter-of-factly.
"Here in Oregon, Blue Mountain Community College has a rodeo team, too. Hey! Maybe UCC could have a rodeo team!" he added brightly, his mind constantly cruising for ideas to make UCC even better.
They say that everything from Texas is big, and Peek’s warmth, enthusiasm and his vision for UCC is certainly Texas-sized. "This is a wonderful college, and it has so much potential for growth," he said. "I’m really looking forward to our future here." Peek’s commitment to UCC is long-term. "I plan to stay till I retire," he said happily.
In July when he was hired, he promptly sold his house in New Mexico and bought a home on the outskirts of Oakland. He lives with grandson, Idan, age eight, who he has been raising for two-and-a-half years. "His mother couldn’t raise him because of health problems," he explained, "and his dad, my son Jason, travels extensively working in construction. So Idan lives with me. We don’t plan these things, but we have to do what’s right. Idan deserves a chance to have a good life, and I’m glad to provide that for him." Terry has another son, Josh, who works in telecommunications in Austin.
Idan and Terry share their home with three large dogs. To Terry’s regret, when he moved here he had to leave behind most of his huge collection of cactuses, bringing only a handful of "babies. "Well, you really can’t move an eight-foot cactus," he says, pragmatically. "I can grow more."
Peek was born and raised in Paris, Tex., got his bachelor’s and master’s degrees at Sam Houston and his Ph.D at Colorado State. He taught for many years at Colorado Mountain College and Texas A&M University, with a 15 year break in between to work for Exxon. For the past six years he was assistant VP at San Juan College in New Mexico.
So how did Terry end up here? Bull-riding. "I used to come through here all the time on the rodeo circuit," he said, explaining that after college he continued to ride for a decade, while holding a teaching job on the side. "I always loved this area, and when the job opportunity came up, I jumped at it. It’s wonderful to be here. I’m home."
