Writing instructor solves literary mystery

Janet Gadwah, UCC's new writing instructor, is prepared to answer the question that has perplexed Emily Bronté's readers for decades-what happened to Heathcliff during the three years he mysteriously disappeared in "Wuthering Heights?" Janet's eyes sparkle with enthusiasm as she describes her partially-written novel which solves that mystery. She is also working on a fictionalized story of Bronté's life for her doctorate. Writing and 19th century English literature are two of her passions which she delights in sharing with her students.
Janet grew up in a small Massachusetts farming community, earned her bachelor's at Vermont College and her master's at Norwich University in Vermont. Her teaching career began when she volunteered as a literacy tutor for adults in Virginia. "In the '50s, Virginia closed all public schools for five years rather than become [racially] integrated. So there's a large group of people who simply didn't learn to read as children," she explained. She found the work inspiring and soon was managing an adult learning center.
So how did Janet end up on the left coast? "My kids all moved here, so I did too." She has twin daughters, Faith and Leah, one living in Portland and one in L.A. Her son, Heath (named after guess who?) shares her home in Sunny Valley. She is eager to move closer to Roseburg. Please contact her if you know of a rental.
Before moving to Douglas County, she lived in Lancaster, CA., where she taught at a junior college for two-and-a-half years. This stint in the desert made her eager to seek a greener, moister environment and Southern Oregon fit the bill. She and Heath moved here last March, and she spent the summer managing the Wolf Creek Branch of the Josephine County Library.
This term, Janet is teaching three days per week here and two days at Rogue Community College. "I won't be teaching down there after fall term," she notes firmly. She is delighted with the variety of students in her classes. "It's wonderful working with bright young freshmen, and I also have a soft spot in my heart for older students. I love the interaction with them, and I love sharing what I feel passionate about."
