Spot light on...

Nelda Osborne, JOBS Program work experience coordinator, can barely contain her enthusiasm for her job, her clientele and her co-workers. "At workforce we serve so many people who haven't had the opportunity to succeed or who have made bad decisions in the past. We've all had rough times, and what's wonderful about our program is that it helps people to turn their lives around. It's so rewarding to be part of that," she said.
Nelda has two personal aspects of her life that make her particularly understanding toward clients. While now she describes herself as "happily divorced," this wasn't how she felt when it happened. "After 10 years of being a homemaker, 10 years of being out of the workforce, I felt absolutely overwhelmed with my new reality," she explained. "That's the case for many women today. There are programs to serve displaced workers, but not so much support for displaced homemakers." Nelda's situation was intensified by a secret she had kept for years– she had not graduated from high school. "It was such a weight off my shoulders to finally come out of the closet and admit it," she said. She obtained her GED at the Woolley Center and proudly spoke at her class commencement in 2002.
Nelda, who is one-quarter Yankton Sioux, was born on the reservation in Wagner, SD and moved with her family to Oregon when she was a toddler. Today she lives in Winston with her boyfriend, Buddy, a five-year-old Lab/Border Collie. Her daughter and son-in-law, Anissa and Mike Walker, live in Roseburg. Son, Adam, is a plumber's apprentice in Seattle.
She also takes great pleasure in her job. "I've done a lot of other jobs in the past, just to make ends meet," she said. "But in this job I'm truly happy to go to work each day. There's a tremendous amount of positive energy concentrated in our little building; the staff functions very well together, and everyone has a wonderful exuberant attitude. I believe that it rubs on our clients too. It's good work that we're doing, and I feel honored to be part of it."
