The Greater Douglas United Way is accepting donations via text and online: http://www.gduway.org/UCCgive

The Umpqua Community College Foundation is accepting donations online and by mail: https://www.umpqua.edu/scholarships-donations

We strongly recommend that donors cast a careful eye when considering other funds, as some are not based at charitable organizations and might apply high administrative fees. Also, unfortunately, at times like these, there are unscrupulous people who will set up false accounts.

Industrial Machinist

This is a four-year program. Apprentices complete 8000 hours of OJT and 576 hours of related classroom training.

Machinists set up and operate lathes, tool grinders, drills and other machine tools to manufacture metal repair parts and fabricate sheet metal, steel frames, and equipment. They do this by interpreting blueprints, engineering drawings, sketches and verbal instructions. Machinists also develop and maintain preventive maintenance procedures and overhaul equipment. This may involve diagnosing and solving new or unique equipment problems by designing, building, and installing equipment improvement prototypes. In analyzing specifications and developing tools they must have knowledge of metal properties and lathe operation and be able to visualize the finished product.

Working Conditions

Machinists generally work indoors around high-speed cutting tools, moving machinery, metal chips and abrasive dusts. There is frequent contact with grease, oils and solvents. The work can be physically strenuous, with some heavy lifting. Machinists must also be precise, careful, and patient to correctly cut, fit, and repair all kinds of machinery.

Average Journeyman Wage

Statewide: $20.99/Hr.      Douglas County: $23.18/Hr.

Program Requirements

Once an applicant has been selected by the employer and is indentured into the apprenticeship program the training begins. After successful completion of training requirements the State of Oregon will issue a Journey-level Machinist card.

Be sure to read the standards for the apprenticeship program to ensure you understand and meet the requirements.
