Donna Smith, Home School Registrar at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

I joined the military immediately after I graduated high school and have just been discharged. Am I eligible?

No, not at this time.

I signed up for the military in high school and I will need to attend basic training during summer, fall or winter term after I graduate from high school. Will I be able to start at Umpqua Community College as a Scholar after I get back?

Yes, you must apply for the UCC Scholars program during the application period.  When providing your eligibility documentation, please submit a letter that includes the dates of your training and your anticipated return.
If you have it, please also supply your military orders that would include this information or a letter from your military liaison explaining your assignment. We will review this and will respond with a letter explaining your steps for when you return from training in order to start receiving your tuition waiver.

I am an international (foreign exchange) student. Am I eligible?

No, this scholarship award is intended for students who reside permanently in the US and within our district only.

Grade Point Average

What if my unweighted cumulative high school GPA is 3.49 at the end of the seventh semester (the first semester of final year of high school)?

A minimum 3.5 GPA is required to qualify for the tuition wavier. No exceptions will be granted and no appeals can be made for decisions regarding ineligibility due to grade point average.

What if I have an unweighted 3.499 cumulative GPA at the end of the first semester of my senior year?

The requirement is technically a 3.50 cumulative GPA. Rounding to the nearest 100th decimal point brings the 3.499 to a 3.50. A 3.49 GPA, however, does not meet the minimum requirement.

If my weighted GPA is 3.50 or better, am I eligible for the scholarship?

No, your GPA must be at least 3.50, unweighted.

Placement (Assessment) Scores

If I have not achieved the minimum reading and writing placement test scores, am I still eligible?

No, you must earn COMPASS assessment scores which place you into Writing 115 or higher and Math 95 or higher.

Can I take the placement test more than once?

Yes, if you do not earn the required minimum scores, you can re-take the test, but will need to pay a testing fee

Do I still need to take the placement test if I have earned Umpqua Community College credit?

This depends.  If you are able to demonstrate enrollment in Writing 115 or higher OR demonstrate completion of Writing 115 or higher, then you will not need to take the Writing COMPASS assessment.  Otherwise, yes you will need to take the COMPASS assessment.

If you are able to demonstrate enrollment in Math 95 or higher OR demonstrate completion of Math 95 or higher, then you will not need to take the Math COMPASS assessment.  Otherwise, yes you will need to take the COMPASS assessment.

Financial Aid

Do I have to be eligible for federal financial aid in order to qualify for this scholarship?

No, you do not have to qualify for federal financial aid in order to be considered for UCC Scholars. However, you must complete the FAFSA. (Free Application for Federal Student Aid)

Enrollment

Can I enroll in summer or do I have to wait to start in fall?

You may start college either term. However, the tuition waiver is available beginning fall term.

Can I take more than 12 credits per term?

Yes, however the tuition waiver will only pay for 12 credits of tuition.  You will be responsible for the cost of any additional credits above the 12.

What if I enroll as a full-time student with 12 credits but I drop some classes?

You must maintain enrollment in 12 credits.  If you drop below 12 credits you will be required to reimburse the college the tuition cost of the credits and will no longer be eligible for the program.

Maintaining Your Tuition Waiver

I understand that I must maintain a quarterly GPA of 3.50 or better while a part of the program. When are GPAs checked for eligibility?

Grades are checked at the end of each term to verify that a quarterly 3.50 GPA has been maintained to determine eligibility for the following term.

Earned Credit Hours

I earned Umpqua Community College credit while in high school. Will those credits count toward the 90 earned hours?

Yes. Credits earned prior to participation in the UCC Scholars program will count toward the 90 earned hours.
