Student Support Services

Transfer Opportunity Program

We encourage our students to achieve academic and personal success and to strive for excellence.

We empower our students to learn and succeed in college and life by offering a multitude of free services including personal support, academic counseling, tutoring, workshops and cultural events.

We inspire our students to have faith in their abilities and make their dreams of a bachelor's degree a reality.

Our nation has asserted a commitment to providing educational opportunities for all Americans regardless of race, ethnic background or economic circumstance. In support of this commitment, Congress established a series of programs to help low-income Americans enter college, graduate, and move on to participate more fully in America’s economic and social life. These programs are funded under Title IV of the Higher Education Act of 1965 and are referred to as the TRiO Programs (referencing the fact that there were initially only three programs-Upward Bound, Talent Search, and Student Support Services). While student financial aid programs help students overcome financial barriers to higher education, TRiO programs help student overcome class, social and cultural barriers to higher education.

Transfer Opportunity Program is a Student Support Services TRIO program that focuses on helping UCC Students who are first generation, low income, and/or disabled to reach their goals of earning four-year college degrees. We offer free, individualized services and support to help eligible students prepare to transfer to a four-year college on the way to earning their bachelors degrees.

Academic Advising/Student Transfer Plans

TOP staff provide academic advising and develop individualized Term by Term Planners to help each TOP student complete all course work necessary to transfer on the time line that works best for him/her.  TOP staff work with individual TOP students to provide the support they need to complete their UCC education and successfully transfer to university.

Financial Aid/Scholarship Planning
All TOP students are required to apply for financial aid and scholarships. TOP staff provide one-on-one critiques of scholarship applications, scholarship workshops, and help with financial aid issues.

Peer Tutoring
The Peer Tutor Program provides one-on-one tutoring for TOP students with UCC students who have been successful in the same courses. Students meet with their tutors on campus at times that fit their schedules. There is no limit to the number of courses students can receive tutoring in, although availability of tutors in some subjects may be limited. Students can meet up to 3 hours per week per class in which they receive tutoring. Subjects offered include Math, Sciences, Writing, Foreign Languages, and others. Study groups and limited drop-in tutoring is also available.

Career Assessment Program
Students participating in the Career Assessment Program will meet for one hour sessions to discuss career options using career inventories to narrow choices. Students will also learn how to investigate possible careers.

Cohort Opportunities
Upon entry into the TOP program students become part of a cohort that meets weekly.  Traditional students enter a First Year Experience cohort and nontraditional students enter into a small group cohort.  In both cases new students will participate in the strengthening of their college success skills as well as their finacial literacy and career planning skills.  The cohort format allows students to make lasting connections with other TOP students on campus and increases their exposure to TOP services.

Cultural/Educational Events
TOP arranges for free tickets to cultural and educational events for TOP students, giving them the opportunity to experience things they might not otherwise pursue.

University Campus Visits
TOP schedules visits to Oregon universities each term, arranging for TOP students to meet with faculty or advisors from their intended major/field and go on campus tours to get a feel for campus life.

Educational Workshops/Seminar
TOP schedules educational workshops/seminars to assist students with educational goals and academic progress.

The TOP Student Support Services Program is 100% funded through the a grant from the U.S. Department of Education under the Higher Education Act of 1965 in  the amount of $269,486 to serve 160 participants annually.

TOP/SSS is an equal opportunity program.
