Engineering and Drafting Technician: One-Year Certificate

Engineering and drafting technicians work with and provide technical support to licensed engineers and surveyors. Technicians prepare design drawings and assist with field work.

The coursework for the one-year certificate includes five computer-aided-design courses using AutoCAD, Civil3D, and SolidWorks software; beginning GIS course; introductory surveying class; introductory engineering courses; basic spreadsheets for engineering applications; basic writing courses; and math through trigonometry.

A completion certificate is awarded once all required courses, electives and general education requirements are successfully completed. The curriculum also encompasses the courses required for pathways certificates in drafting, surveying, and water quality pathways certificates.

The required courses in this program are included in the Civil Engineering and Surveying Technology degree, so any student who wishes may continue in the two-year AAS program.

The one-year complete certificate can also serve as a pre-engineering program, for the students that may want to continue in the Engineering Transfer program.

Careers

Average beginning salaries for engineering and drafting technicians are generally in the range of $13.50 to $18.50 per hour depending on experience and other factors. Job demand for trained workers in this field is related to the amount of construction and development that is occurring in the area. People interested in this career field should be prepared to consider the possibility of relocating to gain initial experience, as this is a high demand position in areas where significant development is occurring.

Additional information on job opportunities for Drafting Technicians and Engineering Technicians can be found in the the Oregon Labor Market Information Website.
